1~10까지의 수 개념이 등장하며 각 숫자 마다 한 노인이 등장해 재미있는 사건이 일어 나면서, 그 숫자 만큼의 뼈다귀를 개들에게 주고 사라집니다. 하늘나라, 눈 밭, 야구장, 바닷가 등 각양 각색의 배경 속에서 해당 숫자 만큼 개를 찾는 재미도 있습니다.  이 책은 이야기의 흐름을 알기 보다 Rhyme 이나 숫자 찾기에 관심을 갖고 읽어 주면 됩니다.

책을 읽어 가면서 각 페이지의 삽화 내용을 담고 있는 장소에 대해 이야기 해 봅니다.

노인의 행동에 대한 다양한 표현들을 익혀 봅니다.

1부터 10까지의 숫자와 끝소리가 같은 소리로 끝나는 단어를 찾아보고 읽어보면서 Rhyme 을 느끼며 이해해 봅니다.

▣ 본문 내용 및 해석

This old man, he played One. He played Nick nack on his drum. 
1을 연주하는 아저씨가 있습니다. 
Nick nack paddywhack, give the dog a bone. 

This old man went to rolling home. 

이 아저씨가 북을 치고 놀더니 개에게 뼈다귀를 한 개 주고는 집으로 굴러갔어요. 

This old man played Two. 
2를 연주하는 아저씨가 있습니다. 
Nick nack paddywhack, give the dogs a bone. 

This old man went cobbling home. 

신발을 톡톡 치더니 강아지에게 뼈다귀를 주고 칠면조 소리를 내며 집으로 돌아갔어요. 

This old man, he played Three,

3을 연주하는 아저씨가 있습니다. 

Nick nack nick and..Up the tree! 
장난을 하다가 나무위로 올라갔어요. 
Nick nack paddywhack, give the dog a bone. This old man went purring home. 
강아지에게 뼈다귀를 주고 고양이처럼 가르릉 거리며 집으로 갔어요.

4를 연주하는 아저씨가 있습니다.

문밖에서 똑똑똑 노크를 하고 있어요. 
This old man was welcomed home. 
그 아저씨는 열렬한 환영을 받았지요.

5를 연주하는 아저씨가 있습니다.. 
He played nick nack on the hive. Toss the dog a bone. 

This old man ghightailed it home. 
벌 통위를 탁탁 치고 놀다가 강아지들에게 뼈를 던져주고는 집까지 쫓겨갔어요. 

This old man he played Six. 

6을 하는 아저씨가 있습니다.

Told the hen to hatch six chicks... 
암탉에게 병아리 여섯 마리를 낳으라고 말했어요. 
Nick nack paddywhack, took the chickies home, 
그 아저씨가 병아리 집을 가져가바렸어요. 
Please old man we want a bone. 
(개들이 말했어요.) '아저씨! 우리 뼈다귀 주세요.' 

 

This old man, he played Seven, Soared right up to doggy heaven. 
7을 연주하는 아저씨가 있습니다. 강아지들의 천국까지 활강해서 날아오르는 아저씨예요. 
Nick nack paddywhack, served them all a bone. 
강아지들에게 뼈다귀를 나눠주고 작별 뽀뽀를 해주고 다시 돌아왔어요. 

This old man, he played Eight. Past his bedtime much too late. 
8을 연주하는 아저씨가 있습니다. 잠자리에 들 시간이 훨씬 늦어버렸어요. 
Nick nack paddywhack, tired and all alone...

Eight kind sled dogs hauled him home. 

너무 피곤하고 외로웠는데 여덟마리의 썰매 개들이 집까지 태워줬어요. 

This old man. He played Nine, playing nick nack feeling fine. 
9를 연주하는 아저씨가 있습니다. 닉팀 넥팀 경기예요. 기분 너무 좋네요. 

Nick nack paddywhack, when the ball was thrown, 

This old man went sliding home. 

공이 던져지고 아저씨는 홈으로 미끄려져 들어왔어요. 

This old man, he played Ten. This time paddywhack, Ten eggs, hen! 

10을 연주하는 아저씨가 있습니다. 

"이번에는 달걀 10개를 낳아야 해!" (아저씨가 말했어요) 
Nick nack shells crack, Raptors want a bone... 
달걀 껍질이 깨지고 공룡(raptors)들이 뼈다귀를 달라고 하네요. 
Grabbed their bones and raptored home. 
자기들 뼈다귀를 움켜쥐고 집으로 돌아갔어요.
